The executive order starts the department’s dissolution procedure, which needs congressional approval.

Although his attempts are certain to encounter legal challenges and constitutional obstacles, US President Donald Trump has fulfilled a campaign pledge to start closing the Department of Education.
The Republican leader signed an executive order on Thursday that will initiate the department’s liquidation in a lavish ceremony. Around the president, a semicircle of kids were seated at desks, each holding a copy of the executive order that they needed to sign. The kids complied when Trump uncapped his marker to sign the order. The children joined him in lifting up the finished order for the cameras.
Prior to the signing event, Trump declared, “I will sign an executive order to begin eliminating the Federal Department of Education once and for all.”
It also sounds odd, doesn’t it? We’re going to abolish the Department of Education, and everyone knows it’s the proper thing to do, including Democrats.
Democrats and proponents of education, however, swiftly condemned the move as more than just another instance of presidential overreach.
